Coffee is one of the most popular commodities on Earth. It's grown by nearly 125 million farmers, from Latin America to Africa to Asia. But as man-made climate change warms the atmosphere, the notoriously particular coffee plant is struggling. Places like Colombia, which once had the perfect climate to grow Arabica coffee, are changing. Now, experts estimate the amount of land that can sustain coffee will fall 50 percent by 2050. It's not just a crisis for consumers but for the millions who have made a livelihood out of growing coffee.

Okay, I’ve heard climate change is going to ruin wine too. No coffee, no wine. Can we still get tea, or will that be gone too?
James Wilkinson
Oh no! Now thousands of middle class Americans will be forced to find a personality that isn’t defined by coffee.

It's not an essential commodity but a luxury. Don't care if it disappears.

If Arabica coffee is so picky, and coffee is such a big industry, couldn't we create large growing facilities with proper UV/temperature balances?

If we paid these farmers twice as much for their crop, the price of a coffee here would not change in most instances. This is because the amount per cup is so small that price rounding will take precedence. Your $3.79 coffee will probably still be $3.79, but there's a small chance it will become $3.89. The companies that deal in this coffee do not mind paying the farmers a lot more, financially, even if it means paying out of pocket. It is such an insignificant amount of money to them that it doesn't even meet the discretionary budget limits of many of their firms. The real reason these companies refuse to pay more for coffee is that in keeping the farmers poor, the companies can maintain control over the farmers.
In short, what I am saying is that if we were to enforce fair pay for these farmers, it wouldn't increase the price of our coffee just a tiny bit, it wouldn't increase it at all.

There.. my anxiety's back again..

All this is determined by sound principles, thanks. Not having to deal with hideous hives/urtacaria, and enjoying healthy, balanced and smooth skin simply feels great. If you’re not reluctant of something completely different I agree that Shane Zormander’s homepage is surely a good example that actually works.

Coffee is going to be a luxury product in a couple of decades. Enjoy coffee until you can afford it!

Columbia coffee. I jhave been drinking coffee for decades and find Columbia coffee to be terrible, the worst type of coffee. Who drinks coffee from Columbia? It was, I believe, not at all indigenous to Columbia, si or no? Anyway, points well taken.

I guess we have to raise to coffee price.

This is just one small problem compared to so many other problems due to climate change.

I wish leaders were more afraid of climate change. There is only so much we can do as individuals to protect the environment. This is so scary and we just sit here, continuing life as if nothing happened.
Logan Finn
Anyone here needs to know that this video doesn’t address the big problem. Major coffee chains use ways to not pay the farmers living wages. Go learn about Fair Trade Coffee. Try a local shop! Your local shop will know where they get their coffee. A barista at Starbucks doesn’t know how to tie their shoes.

It will simply get more and more expensive. That until it eventually runs out.

Of all the problems in the world, this is a true crisis.

The irony is that these farmers know & accept more about global warming than so called global leaders like trump.
